Pedro Americo was a Brazilian painter, writer, scientist, 
philosopher and poet. He studied painting at the Imperial Academy
of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro and then in Paris. He was a pupil of 
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Carle Vernet.
