Karl Friedrich Lessing was a German Romantic painter born in
Wroclaw who was the grandnephew of the famous poet,
playwright and art critic Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Early in his
career he painted dark, melancholic and romantic
landscapes in the style of Caspar David Friedrich. In addition to
landscapes of castles, ruins and cemeteries, he painted robbers,
monks and knights, and also painted on literary subjects, 
including fairy tales.
