Adolph Tidemand (14 August 1814 – 8 August 1876)

Adolph Tidemand, Low Church Devotion 1848.

This painting depicts a lay preacher, Hans Nielsen Hauge, who traveled 
 through Norway and preached clandestinely to people on farms. 
The Conventicle Ordinance of 1741 forbade laymen from holding 
edifying assemblies.
Hauge has been arrested and fined several times.
